Screen Time Cost Calculator
Your daily phone hours, priced in years of your life and the things you could do instead.
Settings, Screen Time (iPhone) or Digital Wellbeing (Android) shows your real number. Most adults land at 4 to 5 hours.
Not zero. Maps, messages, and music are fine. Pick the number you would keep.
At this pace, one year on your phone is
The floor rule: you will not hit the new number every day. On the days you do, check it off. On the days you do not, tomorrow is still there. The hours only come back on the days you show up.
Life math assumes 16 waking hours a day to age 80. Nothing on this page is saved or sent anywhere.
How the screen time calculator works
Look up your real number first: Settings then Screen Time on iPhone, Digital Wellbeing on Android. Most adults are surprised to find 4 to 5 hours a day. Put that on the first slider.
The second slider is the number you would keep. Not zero; maps, messages, and music are useful. Two hours is a common target and still leaves room for all of that.
The tool multiplies the gap by 365 and shows what those hours buy: books, workouts, full nights of sleep, dinners cooked, a language learned. Add your age and the value of your hour for the years-of-life and dollar versions.
Why the number matters more than the guilt
Four and a half hours a day is 1,642 hours a year, 41 forty-hour work weeks, and from 35 to 80 about 12 years of waking life. Nobody chooses that. It happens fifteen minutes at a time.
Guilt does not move the number. A replacement does. The hours only come back on the days you put a book, a walk, or a workout where the phone used to be, so pick one swap from the list and make it the habit.
You will miss days. That is fine and expected; the calculator counts the days you show up, and so should you. Tracking the swap with a friend who cheers the days you make it works better than a screen time limit you swipe past.
Questions people ask
How much time does the average person spend on their phone?
Most surveys put adults at 4 to 5 hours a day, and teenagers higher. At 4.5 hours a day that is about 1,640 hours a year, or 41 forty-hour work weeks. Your own Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing report is the number that matters; put it in the calculator.
How many hours a year do I spend on my phone?
Daily hours times 365. Two hours a day is 730 hours a year, three hours is 1,095, four hours is 1,460, five hours is 1,825. Divide by 16 waking hours for full days: five hours a day is 114 full waking days a year.
How do I reduce screen time without going cold turkey?
Pick a keep number, not zero, and replace the gap with one specific thing: a book at the time you usually scroll, a walk after dinner, the phone charging outside the bedroom. Check off the days you make it and do not count the days you do not. A friend doing the same swap doubles the odds.
