How to make a vision board
Give the board a title, usually the year. Then pick a layout: square for sharing, poster for printing, or phone wallpaper, which keeps the top clear for your lock screen clock.
Choose six to twelve things you want, across a few parts of life: health, money, people, work, the inner stuff. Fewer is stronger. A board with forty things on it is a mood, not a direction.
Tap a tile to add a photo or words. Use your own photos where you can: the trail you want to run, the city you want to see, the people you want more Sunday dinners with. Word tiles cover the rest, and the idea lists fill an empty board fast.
Save it as an image and set it as your wallpaper, or print it and put it where you will see it every day. Then pick one tile and start the daily habit behind it.
Vision board ideas by life area
Health: run my first 5K, eight hours of sleep, cook at home, hike a mountain, strong and rested. Money: debt free, six months saved, buy a home, ask for the raise, give generously.
People: Sunday dinners with family, date night every week, two new friends, host a dinner party. Career: launch my business, work I am proud of, find a mentor, speak on a stage.
Mind and home: calm mornings, journal every night, read 24 books, less phone and more life, a calm and tidy home, a reading nook. Adventure: see Japan, learn to surf, camp under the stars.
The strongest tiles are about who you are becoming: I am a runner, I finish what I start, I keep promises to myself. A thing you want can be bought. A person you are becoming has to be practiced, and that is where daily habits come in.
Do vision boards work?
On their own, not much. Psychologist Gabriele Oettingen found that daydreaming about the result can even sap the energy to chase it. What works better is pairing the dream with the obstacle and a plan, which she calls mental contrasting.
So treat the board as the destination, not the trip. Pick one tile, name the daily habit that moves you toward it, and give it a floor so small a bad day still counts. A run-walk of 10 minutes gets you to the 5K tile. Saving $5 a day gets you to debt free.
Then let people see you do it. A daily checkin with friends turns a picture on the wall into something you actually do, which is why we built Habit Huddle.
Questions people ask
What should I put on a vision board?
Six to twelve things you really want this year, across a few areas of life, plus one or two lines about who you are becoming. Your own photos beat stock images, because they are specific. Leave off anything you only want because someone else does.
How do I make a vision board on my phone?
Choose the phone wallpaper layout, tap a tile, and add photos from your camera roll or words from the idea lists. Tap Save image, choose Save Image in the share sheet, then set it as your lock screen. The layout leaves the top clear so the clock does not cover your board.
Is there a free vision board template to print?
Yes. Tap Blank template and print it. Each tile carries a life area like health, money or travel, so you can glue in magazine cutouts or write on it by hand. The poster layout fits a landscape-sized board on a letter page.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The photos are read by your browser and drawn on your device. Nothing is uploaded, and the photos clear when you leave the page. Your words, title and layout are kept in this browser so a refresh does not lose them.
